This week I sat with some 7th grade girls as they ate their lunch. The memories of Jr. High lunch quickly shot through my mind. The noise, the laughing, the tables that were guys only and girls only clubs, the pockets of boys and girls sitting by themselves with blank stares as they looked at everyone else having fun and I am sure wishing they were able to get the nerve to go and sit at that table with all the laughter, but paralyzed by the fear of rejection I am sure.
So I start asking questions about the groups sitting together. That group is the popular guys and that group is the popular girls. She looked at me and said you know the football players and cheerleaders. Oh yeah I remember that. That group over there is the kids always in trouble, yep, that has changed they all sit together plotting their next rule to break. I asked so what group am I sitting with here. They all in unison smiled and said we are the normal group.
Then one of the girls said with a real sense of sadness. The community that we had when we came back from the retreat is now gone. It didn’t last a week. Then she said I wish we could get back to everyone talking and caring about each other. But we are back to this….
It is now nearly 24 hours since that conversation. I have thought a great deal about her observation. I am with her I wish those 7th graders would keep up the same community that they had when they left the retreat. Yet I just can’t get over the fact that one 7th grade girl at Aledo Middle School gets it and wants it.
I said you know, it could begin with you. You could work really intentionally to lead all these 7th graders to community with each other. At least it would be worth the try. She grinned and nodded and affirmative.
It is so wonderful to hear that one 7th grade girl gets it. The question is do we get it?
Acts 2:42-47 42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.
43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.
